Death with Dignity
One of my uncles, my mum's oldest sister's husband, had heart problems for a long time. Surprisingly, that is not what killed him. Last Friday he was diagnosed with lung cancer (he didn't smoke) that had spread to his spine. He had a very short time to live and was in agonizing pain.
My uncle was a long-time residence of Oregon and completely eligible for the Death with Dignity Act. This last Wednesday he, with his wife and son with him, decided to participate in the act and committed suicide.
Godspeed, Jack.

I'm from Oregon and though I'm familiar with the Death with Dignity Act, I've never known anyone who has actually used it (though some would have certainly qualified for it). On a political level, I have no problem with it and think people should have the choice. But I imagine that having a personal relationship with someone who wants to use that option would be very difficult.
My aunt said it was easier in a way. It's not like the abruptness of an accident of some sort. The grief is still there, of course, but when you know death is coming and when, it takes some of the shock out of it.
